CREATE Success After-School and Summer Program

New opportunities for students to develop their minds, muscles, and skill sets await them at our Culture, Recreation, Education And Technology Experiences (C.R.E.A.T.E.) for Success at Taos Day School Out-of-School Time program. This is when Taos Day School Eagles’ educational journey takes them outside the classroom and beyond regular school hours.

After an exciting day of classroom learning, 75% of Taos Day School students attend our C.R.E.A.T.E. program for 30 days or more. Our after-school program is open every day during the school year until 5:30 p.m. for students to receive additional tutoring, learn Tiwa language and culture, participate in team sports, enjoy games and activities with classmates, and experience the latest technologies.

C.R.E.A.T.E. continues on campus for our summer program and welcomes students from neighboring schools. During the summer, C.R.E.A.T.E. operates 10 hours a day for six weeks, where students engage in activities that reflect the core structure of our program.

CULTURE is the cornerstone of the Taos C.R.E.A.T.E. Success Out-of-School program. Taos Pueblo youth are benefiting from a variety of cultural activities. During the school year and during summer camp, a healthy self-image is promoted through the support of cultural pride, participation in Native American traditions, and language preservation. Students explore and read about Taos Pueblo and other Native cultures.

The Tiwa Language and Culture Club focuses on preserving the traditional Tiwa language, thereby fostering pride in our cultural and traditional values. Some of the traditional arts workshops including moccasin making, leather works, jewelry, and beading are taught depending on funding and instructors. We meet once a week during the school year and four days a week during summer camp.

RECREATION time is vital to the overall health and wellness of every student. C.R.E.A.T.E. provides several opportunities for students to participate in team sports during the school year, such as soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Summer camp recreation requires students to participate in two hours of structured recreation activities every day during the summer. They are separated by grade level and rotate between three stations: martial arts, sports, and fun games (which include a weekly epic water gun battle).

Students also participate in recreational clubs and outdoor activities such as mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, martial arts, swimming, and gymnastics. Every day after school and during the summer, students enjoy supervised playground time, which includes structured and organized activities, like water gun fights, horseback riding, and free play.

EDUCATION is enhanced by our after-school and summer enrichment programs. Tutoring and homework help are provided Monday - Thursday by experienced tutors. Students and their families appreciate the homework assistance students receive during C.R.E.A.T.E.’s after-school program. Music instruction is provided every day for Kindergarten – 8th grade students during the school year. Enrichment also includes a weekly rotation of education board games, puzzles, art, and book clubs.

Two hours of academic engagement is required for participation in C.R.E.A.T.E.’s six-week summer camp. Research shows that academic summer programs help students retain knowledge into the following school year. All enrichment activities have lesson plans that include math, reading, science and/or public speaking skills. Our enrichment classes also include music lessons, sewing machine lessons, cooking lessons, art, and computer/typing skills.

AND

TECHNOLOGY

EXPERIENCE allows students to receive hands-on training in photography and media arts clubs and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) classes. Students even learn to develop, shoot, and edit their own short films. Evidence of the students’ technical skills and creative visions can be found hanging on the walls of the school cafeteria, local galleries, and stores.

The computer lab is open every day after school and during the summer for schoolwork, research, and educational games.
