Students working on bicycle in school gymnasium.

During the 2023-24 school year the Field Institute of Taos staff have engaged 20, 6-8th grade students in learning bike repair skills each Thursday. They have repaired 30 bikes to safe cycling condition which each student has taken ownership of or giving away to others including the Taos Pueblo Police Department and homeless teens from the Dream Tree Project. The program isn't just about the bikes, as the students learn life skills including observational skills, decision and problem solving strategies, goal persistence, learning styles, and having fun. One student this year mentioned being excited to sleep a little later on school days as she could now take responsibility by cycling herself to school.
