After such a promising start last November, our Eagles are looking forward to bringing home another prize at the 2023 New Mexico Electric Car Challenge. A team of Taos Day School’s burgeoning student engineers (6-8th graders) participated in the Electric Car Challenge for the first time in the school’s history and were awarded the prestigious Ron Rioux Perseverance Award by the race judges. Middle school students from around the globe accepted this annual challenge, where they applied real-life engineering principles to compete in the Race, Design, and Research categories. Our Eagles were confronted with several technical challenges as they formed virtual teams with students from Portugal and New Mexico, yet they still represented Taos Day School with a determined spirit. Our Eagles’ positive, can-do attitude shined brightly throughout the competition, so they earned the Perseverance Award named after Ron Rioux, the inspirational founder of the Electric Car Challenge. This competition was created to generate enthusiasm around STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) skills, and our students are looking forward to creating new prototypes for next year’s challenge.
